Professional Covering Letters

Do you know the purpose of a covering letter and why you should always use one?

Agencies and employers often receive many hundreds of replies for a single job. Their focus is very much on finding a way to reduce the size of their CV pile. It soon becomes less of a quest to find the best candidate, but more to find the quickest way to bin the majority.

CVs are often dry and boring. It takes a lot of effort to scan each one to see if they should make the handful of ones that are worth looking at in more detail. Agencies will frequently tell you that another real problem is that most CVs they receive appear to have little or no relevance to the job. This means that your CV is likely to be in the 95% that will never even make it to the hiring manager.

The purpose of a CV is to spell out in 20 seconds or less why you are the right person for the job. A few well chosen bullet points can make the difference between getting an interview or not.

With the advent of the Internet, many people have simply given up on writing covering letters. It has become too easy just to hit the apply button and attach your CV. However, a clear covering letter does make all the difference to your success.
