The Times New Roman font was the main stay of word processing back in the early to mid 1980’s. However, recent research has showed just how much it can damage your chances of getting your Resume, CV or covering letter properly read.

One of the key factors for is that they get bored wading through piles of Resumes and CV’s. A new position form one of their clients will always get a certain amount of excitement. You have either won a new client or got some repeat business from them. It then goes through a process of discussing the job details and then building an advert. Once this has been checked, they then place the job advert on the various relevant to the appropriate industry sector.

Once they have posted this, they then sit back and wait for the applications to come. Frequently they will get a flood of applications depending on the scarcity of the skills. However, there will often be many applicants who bear little or no relevance to the position. After a while these start to grate and reviewing quickly starts to become a chore. Most consultants will scan a resume and if they find something that looks interesting, then will then take more time to read it properly.

Here is a little know fact - The font has been proven to take 3 times longer to read and digest that other simpler fonts such as Arial! You can immediately see that a jaded recruitment consultant scanning your CV is less likely to spot the key items that they are looking for if you use this font or indeed anything fancy.

Try this out with your Resume or CV. Select the top few paragraphs and try changing them to Times New Roman, Arial and Tahoma. There is a big difference! The other killer about Times New Roman is that it looks old fashioned. Generally most people stopped using this back in the very early 90’s. It simply doesn’t flatter your efforts and won’t sell you effectively. Generally Arial, Tahoma and Verdana look much better without being over the top. There are plenty of other fonts that look truly ghastly. Steer well clear………
